Borough Market
Borough
Market is reputed to be the oldest municipal fruit and vegetable market in
London. It is the successor of one that
was held on London Bridge in the 13thC. In 1756 the management of the market was
transferred from the City of London to the parishioners of St Saviour s
Southwark (now Southwark Cathedral).
In the
late 1990s both Brindisa, a Spanish food business, and Neal's Yard, a whole
food retailer, established presences in Borough. This prompted the market trustees to make an
effort to establish a quality food retail market in addition to the wholesale
operation. Subsequently, Borough Market
became a tourist attraction.
The
wholesale market takes place in the early morning. The retail one is held during the late
morning and afternoons from Thursday to Sunday.1

1. The exact hours of the food market vary a bit each day. Early afternoon is the optimum time to visit.
