Belmarsh

In 2007 it was announced that a new 700-person prison was going to be built next to Belmarsh.

 

Bronzefield

H.M.P. Bronzefield is in Ashford, Surrey. It is the U.K. s largest womens prison.

Halfway Houses

Norman House

Norman House was Britain's first half-way house for former prisoners. It opened in Islington in 1954. It was aided by a granting-giving charity.

Prison Visits

Myra Hindley was a notorious convicted child murderer. Lord Longford was probably the late 20thC's highest profile prison visitor. She became heartily sick of the peer's visits. She asked the newspaper editor David Astor (1912-2001) to try end them.

Wormwood Scrubs

The Church of England sold the land on which Wormwood Scrubs was built. There were several caveats that accompanied the sale. One of these was that a church should be built on the site. Another was that no capital punishment should occur there.
