Chiswick House

Burlington and William Kent designed an entertainment to the east of Chiswick House. They were seeking to promote the ascendancy of the Classicism of Palladio and Inigo Jones over the English Baroque of Wren and Vanbrugh. The earl and his architect's building was a square building with a domed hall at its centre. The pair used Palladio's Villa Rotonda near Vicenza.

The Dukes of Devonshire were Burlington's heirs. They demolished old Chiswick House. In the 1780s they added wings to the pavilion and took to using its as their Middlesex retreat

Chiswick House passed through a series of uses, eventually becoming a psychiatric hospital. In 1928 the property was acquired by the local council.
