Red Marquis
The 4th
Marquis of Normanby (1912-1994) was the only marquis to sit on the Labour
benches in the House of Lords. Some of
his neighbours in the North Riding referred to him as the Red Marquis . He had a dislike of busybodies and
particularly of local councils. He was
not a sentimental person. Upon one
occasion he counselled a friend If you need to dynamite a country house do it
early on a Monday morning.
