The British Lying-in Hospital
The
Middlesex Hospital was founded in 1745 by Sir Hugh Smithson and a group of his
associates. Their purpose may have been
to try to woo Middlesex's electors prior to the next general election. Two years later, the year of the election,
they added a lying-in hospital for women who were about to give birth. In 1749 a faction on the hospital's governing
board wished to enlarge the lying-in facility.
This proposal was opposed by other members of the body. Therefore, the group broke away and
established their own independent institution, opening the British Lying-in
Hospital in Brownlow Street. Thus was
born the British lying-in hospitals movement.
