The Mary Ward Centre
In 1890
Mary Ward established a venture that carried out educational and community
work. The enterprise soon came to be
acknowledged as performing a worthwhile function. In 1894 the newspaper editor and
philanthropist John Passmore Edwards offered to pay for the construction of a
permanent building, while the 11th Duke of Bedford offered a cheap
plot of land on the northern side of Tavistock Place. An Art Nouveau building was designed and then
constructed. In 1897 this opened as the
Passmore Edwards Settlement. In 1921 the
Settlement was renamed the Mary Ward Centre.
In 1981 the Centre relocated to Queen Square.
